Morgause is a hybrid Witch Queen and the elder half-sister of King Arthur. Unlike her youngest sister, she was not born an Architect; her ability to draw on the Via was, like many hybrids, limited. While pregnant with Merlin’s son Mordred, she submitted herself to a transfiguration arranged as part of a deal between the witch Circe, Camelot’s Architect Merlin, her sister Morgan le Fay, and the Emissary enclave at Avalon. The ritual made her the first M’Naad witch, severing her ability to draw on the Via and vastly expanding her access to the Continuance.

As part of what is sometimes called the “Camelot Conspiracy,” Morgause made a separate deal with the Absence: in exchange for seeding the rumor that Mordred was actually her brother Arthur’s bastard son, she would attempt to use the same spells Circe and the enclave had used on her to cure the Absence and restore it to wholeness. The belief that Mordred was Arthur’s son set in place the myth of the Battle of Camlann. For Camelot to become a legend worthy of inspiring future ages, it needed an ending—an explanation for its disappearance.

As Camelot’s final days approached, Morgause cast the spell on the Absence, which appeared to work: for a single summer, it took the form of a mortal man and became Morgause’s lover. The spell failed, however, and the Absence reverted to the bodiless entity with multiple personalities once more. It was during this time, while Arthur and his knights were away, that Kelvin visited Elaine at Camelot—then, in this version, Arthur’s middle half-sister—in order to search for clues to defeat the Absence once and for all.

Morgause is believed to still live at Camelot, beyond the spheres, with her son, her brother, her sisters, the city’s populace, and the Emissaries who once dwelt at Avalon. She is considered the Grandmother of the M’Naad sisterhood, as Mordred—her son in truth—sired many daughters while campaigning with his father and the Knights of the Round Table.

Morgause’s face features prominent high cheekbones, a strong and defined jawline, and piercing, clear blue-gray eyes that convey deep intelligence and focus. She wears her blonde hair pulled back with a subtle side part, neatly tucked behind her ears to frame her face. Her body is tall and slender with an elegant, upright posture, which she carries with a commanding, quiet confidence. Her tailored, dark period-style gowns emphasize her lean frame and serious demeanor.
