Maurice R. Montegarr, commonly called Montegarr or simply the Stranger, is a 1,500-year-old Wandering Architect who arrives to mentor Kelvin in the use of his abilities and later becomes entangled in the present-day crisis surrounding the Atlas. A longtime ally of the LaCroix family, he leans left within Continuum House politics, favoring a more sociological approach to an Architect’s duties. Like all Architects, he possesses the ability to freeze time, shift his vision, shift the spheres, traverse the Via, and perform other feats tied to his station. He has chosen never to marry and has drastically slowed his aging process. He was a child in Camelot and is the son of Nimue and an unnamed Latin American Architect, Itzam Balam of Mesoamerica.

Montegarr appears to be in his early fifties, in peak lean physical condition, with well-tanned Mediterranean skin, sharp jawline and chin, and striking blue-gray eyes. His face is devilishly handsome, with a smile that can seem both warm and knowing, and his dark brown hair carries a touch of gray at the sides, with a slightly lighter shade in front. A mild five o’clock shadow gives him a look that never quite softens into neatness. In modern times, he is usually dressed in jeans and gray sport coats, with a leather choker necklace bearing a small solid gold ancient coin about the size of a quarter. He also wears a gold ring set with a single square-cut emerald.
