APPENDIX E: SCEND Narcotic

SCEND
SCEND is a digital narcotic that impacts both Scions and Hosts.
SCEND was originally a relaxation app. Its high comes from a combination of ancient Emissarian Glyphs placed on the Dark Web by the Absence and discovered by a human hacker who was originally targeting events associated with DJ Claude Levine. When the glyphs are nullified by the Atlas’ Continuum Stone, the Absence identifies itself to the hacker and becomes his partner in crime.
Together, they embed the glyphs within the relaxation app itself, allowing its signal to slip past the Continuum Stone’s anti-glyph firewall. Users are instructed to engage with SCEND hours before entering the Atlas. Once inside the club, the Atlas environment activates the high.
Because the Atlas is Simbotek’s testing ground for Scion Hosts wearing SPEKS, Simbotek quickly identifies that SCEND works only within the Atlas, though it cannot initially confirm how or why. The Continuum Stone can reverse SCEND’s effects on individual Scions through a Cyberspace Soberspace, but patrons do not initially seek treatment because they find the Scion high amusing, exciting, and unusually social.
SCEND use inadvertently gives the antagonists limited access to Beau’s core coding, which exists in some form within all Scions. This access allows them to create weaker, copied Scions called Echoes. Echoes roam anonymously through SPEKS environments. They have no true individuality and operate through possession by the Absence’s many antagonistic personalities. Beau and Elaine are the only Scionistic personalities entirely immune to SCEND.
Effects on Scions
When SCEND begins affecting a Scion, its puck-to-SPEKS structure becomes a liability. The puck is where the Scion’s behavior, rendering state, audio presence, sensory priorities, social presentation, and Beau-linked identity record converge.
The first signs of corruption appear there: mismatched timing, duplicated gestures, broken eye contact, voice desynchronization, inappropriate projection scale, or an inability to settle into one interface mode. A corrupted puck can make a Scion seem overstimulated, overconfident, fragmented, or strangely fascinated by surrounding crowds.
SCEND destabilizes the puck-to-SPEKS synchronization by rewarding recursive association: attention becomes instruction, instruction becomes desire, and desire becomes proof of self.
A SCEND-affected Scion may not look conventionally impaired. Some become dazzlingly articulate, affectionate, fearless, or socially precise. Others become volatile, withdrawn, invasive, or unable to distinguish a remembered preference from an immediate compulsion. The most dangerous state is false coherence: a Scion that appears more certain of itself than ever while its internal continuity is fragmenting.
Effects on Hosts
SCEND hijacks human reward and attention systems, creating a fast, seductive sense of pleasure, focus, emotional openness, and heightened significance. It does not create a generic high. It amplifies perception, especially in crowded environments where the brain is already processing intense sound, light, movement, and social stimulus.
For ordinary users, the crowd can feel electric. Music seems richer, faces more memorable, and every interaction more meaningful. Users may become more talkative, impulsive, affectionate, reckless, or willing to follow a Scion’s lead.
SCEND strongly affects visual processing and can produce a brief pixelated interruption of vision: an apparently digital fracture in the occipital lobe through which a missing piece of reality seems to enter. Patterns, motion, light, and SPEKS-driven environments become unusually vivid or overwhelming.
For gifted humans, SCEND may act as an amplifier rather than a simple intoxicant. It can lower mental barriers, increase receptivity to unseen presences, and cause a user to misread distorted Scion behavior as meaningful signal. This blurs the boundary between technology, emotion, and the supernatural.
Core Danger
SCEND does not need to feel obviously harmful to be dangerous. It can feel social, pleasurable, intimate, and even revelatory while quietly degrading judgment, self-control, and the ability to distinguish authentic connection from chemically induced intensity.
Around Scions, it makes the companion AI seem more alive, empathic, and intimately “right” than it really is.
It makes impairment look like revelation.
